Take Me Back to the First Time

Artwork by Ahmed Elwagie

Take me back to the moment I first saw the fire
That would destroy my paper fort
Nothing more than a flicker
In the glance that passed between us

I should have walked away
Or let you walk away
But would you still have loved me
If self-destruction wasn’t imminent?

Take me back to the time you first held me
When the afterglow was stronger than our demons
And the shadows of our past stirred ever so slightly
But then quietly went back to sleep

I know you caught a glimpse of it
I saw it too
But I buried my head in your still warm chest
And they left us, if only for a moment

Take me back to the time we first met
When our eyes had more light than darkness
And the broken pieces of our bodies
Were awkwardly but safely glued in.
