If Nothing Else, I’ve Had This

Artwork by Ahmed H. Elwagie

I have watched the sun set
the day we first met
I have heard the sound of your name
rolling through my tongue
again and again
it takes too much
from the trees of velvet green
to the ground beneath my feet
to be able to savour you
to be able to hold myself around you
heaven knows I have surrendered
made commitments
to keep you safe in my thoughts
to hold you through the night
to kiss you under the moonlight.

I have listened to my heart
it tells me you’re the answer
to all the questions I’ve asked
and to all my solicitations.
Does this make any sense?
or is it poetic,
I can hardly apprehend
this love and it’s aesthetics–

To give yourself away
to hold someone close this way
it takes too much
of what you are
and what you hope to be
a semantic affinity of such purity
a tragedy is what this is
a forlorn epiphany of a love so exquisite
but in all it’s glory
I want to embrace it as it is
whatever happens from now
if nothing else…I’ve had this.
