A Stepping Stone Heart

Artwork by Emanuele Tozzoli via AXS ART

I’ve got a stepping stone heart,
useful for crossing to the other side;
it’s cracked, but someone’s work of art.

There will be others, once you depart,
eager to cross me in one stride.
See, I’ve got this stepping stone heart.

In weathering, you’ve done your part,
worn it down faster than the tide;
battered it, all in the name of art.

I’ve never heard of a fresh start;
not when floods push me aside,
not with a stepping stone heart.

Somewhere, I’ve got a counterpart,
someone to travel with, far and wide;
uncracked, they’re easier to see as art.

Just once, I’d like to be set apart,
but there’s nothing I haven’t tried.
I’ve got a stepping stone heart,
it’s cracked, but my work of art.
