Fading Stars

Artwork by Merna Alaa

I miss the time
When I thought that stars
Are simply
Wayward fireflies, lost in the night,
Or heaven’s citizens holding up their candlelights,
Or runway lights of this cosmic spaceport guiding us to safely come home;
But not anymore,
These balls of burning gas
Are nothing more
Than universal clocks ticking
Until they finally run out
Of battery, or time
Just as we do, as we are
Nothing more
Than fading stars twinkling
Away in this brief and lonely night
Until it’s not, we’re not, anymore
When our flickering lights
Finally find their place in the eternal white.
