Dirty Pop (Art)

From the gritty to the glamorous, pop art is alive and well in the heart of Berlin! And what better way to finish off Berlin Art Week than with a day of experiencing the most beautiful art this city has to offer? This Sunday promises exhibits galore with everything from a giant toy collection and photos of upholstered sofas to an exhibit by Chinese artist Liu Chu about the dynamics of the urban landscape and culture. Berlinische GalerieKunst in Berlin 1880-1980” 10am-6pm

Das ist Berlin! Bask in the glory of Berlin art with a chronological exhibition of work all the way back to 1880 with themes anywhere from Eastern European avant-garde to Berlin Dada. Notable artists include Otto Dix, Heinrich Zille, El Lissitzky, and many more!

Loris “The Surface of Displacement” by BENTEN CLAY 11am-7pm 

This is one art exhibit that cannot be fully absorbed through visual stimulus alone, to be experienced properly viewers are physically immersed in the environment. BENTEN CLAY— the artistic collaboration of Vera Hofman and Sabine Schründer bring you an exhibit designed in reference to an Icelandic dam, a massive slab lying skewed in the gallery space and occupying the entire room.

C/O BerlinCommon Places” Jörg Sasse 11am-8pm

Photographer/genius Jörg Sasse takes ordinary objects and transforms them into something greater than themselves. The exhibit causes one to think, what significance do the material objects in our life have? Sasse’s photos are beautiful and also intellectually stimulating..what could be better?

 me Collectors RoomART & TOYS” by Selim Varol 12pm-6pm

Sweet, innocent, cute, fun–Turkish-born collector Selim Varol proves that no matter what age, we still love toys. If you still haven’t seen his pop surrealist exhibit at me Collectors, you definitely need to head down to me Collectors Room and see his collection of over 15,000 figures, the largest collection in Europe!

 re:MMX Project Launch: 2pm-8pm

The former art space MMX is now re-launching itself under the auspices of re:MMX. Join them for their final day of their opening weekend for an all-encompassing art show with sound sculptures, video works, a circadian light room (and another installation entitled “The Cave”), photography and painting. 

Galerie KuchlingUrban Hormones” Liu Chuanbao 2pm-7pm

If you haven’t seen Chinese artist, Liu Chuanbao’s exhibit at Galerie Kuchling, you are missing out! This incredibly talented artist mixes sensuality, violence, and political undertones in his colorful and dynamic paintings based on the idea of “the Metropolis” as an organism with a will of it’s own.
