Capturing The Human Condition

"I'm a woman who trusts her feelings," explains Spanish artist Beatriz Crespo as she describes falling in love with Berlin three years ago – a decisive moment that brought her to move to the city. We are visiting her current solo exhibition, Verdandi, at Porcelaingres Showroom – a porcelain manufacturer who is now dabbling in exhibiting artwork. She walks us through the exhibition space filled with her large-scale paintings and collection of smaller drawings that are accentuated perfectly by the low-light and rustic brick layers. Her portraits of characters that are familiar, and yet distant and mysterious, greet us at every corner.

Beatriz explains the minimal strokes and basic lines that make up her drawings and paintings – each is significant, like a word or line in poetry, all is essential in her artwork. Using artistic mediums and material in a symbolic way help her reach a next level of consciousness that allows insight into the human condition. She describes the materials she uses as "bare and honest" – from charcoal to minerals used to create a glittering effect – the mixed media creates a contrast that draws the viewer into the art and forces them to step closer and look at the details.

Unlike any artist we've met, Beatriz invites us to touch and feel her artwork – texture is another element that is very important for her, not just visual texture, but also a kind that you can touch and feel.
