X-Rated: Berlin’s Best Weekend Art Events

It’s that time again––shake off the shackles of the working week and consult our weekend listings for the best art events in town. With a number of heavyweight gallery openings as well as the usual sprinkling of alternative (opera in a pool, anyone?) events, we have your weekend covered.

Berlinische Galerie – K. H. Hödicke “Painting, Sculpture, Film” Opening – 7pm

Already home to an array of his work, Berlinische Galerie is dedicating its next exhibition to the work of German artist K. H. Hödicke. Covering––as the title would suggest––painting, sculpture and film, the exhibition will focus on his work from the sixties and seventies.

Mindpirates – Exhibition Opening and Reading – 7:30pm

Join journalists Claudius Seidl and Ralf Schmerberg in their homage to Berlin with Seidl’s book readings from his collection of short stories on the city and Schmerberg’s exhibition. With the show “Death takes one day at a time,” image-maker and journo Schmerberg has photographed and filmed his experiences in the city for over fifteen years, depicting all facets of everyday life. Warning: the talk may be in German, but art knows no boundaries, right?

Haus am Waldsee – Artist Talk & Dinner – 7:30pm

In conjunction with their latest exhibition “Here, Architectures, Memories, Utopias” focusing on social utopias of the 19th and 20th centuries, an artist dinner is being held with artist Ina Weber. For €35 you can dine with the artist and feast upon the delightful cuisine of our culinary/art fusion favorite Zagreus Projekt.

Babylon – Videoart at Midnight – 12 am

If the Berlinale has left you craving more film action in your life then look no further than this amazing cinema. Showing video art monthly on the big screen, Videoart at Midnight will feature work by Scottish artist Douglas Gordon, who lives and works in Berlin. The best part? It’s free!

Stattbad Wedding – Kiez Oper: Insanity – Doors 8pm

Home not only to art events and club nights galore, Stattbad Wedding is this week playing host to a live opera featuring word class singers and musicians. Performing a show entitled “Insanity” with music by the classical greats (think Handel, Bach, Gesualdo et al) this is one evening we don’t want to miss. You have no excuse as the event runs on both Friday and Saturday night!

Hamburger Bahnof – Martin Kippenberger “Sehr gut, very good” Opening – 7pm

Celebrating this infamous German artist’s work is a show aimed not at being a retrospective but “rather an approximation of both the private and public persona of the artist Martin Kippenberger.” Known as much for his excessive lifestyle as his art, the exhibition will cover Kippenberger’s prolific artistic output in the year which would have witnessed his 60th birthday had he still been alive.

Expat Markt – English Theatre Berlin, Kreuzberg – Starts 12 noon

The locals might hate us, our German sucks and we miss our family, but overall being an expat here is pretty amazing. Feel proud not being a native Berliner at this weekend event celebrating international expatriate artists with perfromances, a marketplace and much more.

Galerie Max Hetzler – Ernesto Neto “notes stones and dots” Opening – 7pm

There is little information on this upcoming opening but we’re excited all the same if Neto’s show at The Hayward Gallery, London, was anything to go by. Famous for his giant tactile installations, this Brazilian artist is one to watch.
