Tip Of The Hat: Berlin’s Best Weekend Art Events

It’s no secret George Clooney is in town working on his latest film, Monuments Men (a film about the rescue and preservation of fine art and cultural paraphernalia in Germany during WWII). Now, although BAPs has already enncountered him out and about, we’re not saying that you will too–but we’re also not saying that you won’t! Perhaps he’ll be out this weekend doing some field research on the contemporary preservation of fine art and culture, which is done by engaging with, visiting and supporting the present-day creatives in the field. So we round up some of this weekend’s best art events in Berlin; our grain of sand in this preservation–check them out!

Dittrich & Schlechtriem – “Hester” Opening – 6-8pm

Start off your night with a little grotesquerie, why not? The documentary-styled photographs of Asger Carlsen are uncanny and deforming by sculpting human bodies into something familiar yet macabre. This solo show brings together his latest series of photographs. Torsos without extremities or blobs of flesh with only a pair of legs, his chimerical subjects appear as sculptures whose sense of realism are sure to make you glad they only exist within the photos.

Akademie der Künste –“Nothing to declare? World maps of art since 89” Opening – 7pm

Since 1989 the art world has experienced a proliferation in biennales all over the globe.  Groovy, no? Yet with the boom came new geopolitical, social, cultural, and economic effects that have washed away the centuries old Western art perception of a centralized art bubble and its peripheries. This exhibition project explores those changes and their implications.

Studio Berlin – “Tommy Dollar Exhibition” Opening – 7:30pm

Andy Warhol gave him the nickname “Tommy Dollar,” but the Swedish artist Thomas Dellert-Dellacroix has made a name for himself during the last 30 years. “The mirror has two sides – from Monroe to Warhol and back again” is his latest endeavor. Here, in collaboration with Agnieszka Dellert-Dellfina and Bruno Ehrs, he brings together a collection of paintings, silkscreen collages, photographs, and video installations. You dont want to miss this one!

Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz – “ Hybrid Object – Eastern Promises”

Although there is no opening today, this Friday marks the beginning of the international art project Eastern Promises. Its ongoing exhibition series “Hybrid Object” brings together various cultural institutions, curators, and participants. The brainchild of Serbian-Slovenian sculptor Veljko Zejak, this project is a three-week long event that combines an open-studio week, a “bio happening,” a workshop for students, even a Pecha Kucha event, along with a final exhibition. Check out this link for the entire schedule!

ReTramp – “Traveling Through the Lens” Opening – 7-11pm

Four photographers, driven by the will to record, trace and remember, form the body of this exhibition. Despite their different paths and situations, the commonalities are stark. Perspective, identity, and transformation are at the crux of this show.

Sameheads – “Desinstallation” Opening – 8pm

Materia Espiritual is an 8-year-old multidisciplinary artist group that promises to create a window into a different dimension with this show. Their means to do so are by combining video, painting, and sound design. Also expect to encounter a live painting installation and live electronics. The gap into this dimension expands until 4am!

Savvy Contemporary – “Non [ ] ” Opening – 7pm

Non [ ] (Non Space) flirts with impossibility. The first proposal by the curatorial collective “To Whom It May Concern,” this group show explores those in-between spaces that are often so difficult to difine. I can’t even define what to expect, so I’ll just quote the program: “limbo spaces, spaces in-between, in-transit spaces, waiting space, thinking space, place-less space, time and space.” You do the math.

Superplan Berlin – “Oversized & Underpriced” Event – 8pm

Just as it sounds: great art for little money! This is number four of Superplan’s popular Oversized & Underpriced events. Designed by international urban artists, a share of the proceeds will go to “Skateistan,” a skateboarding school in Afghanistan and to the preservation of the hatch sticker museum.

Art Claims Impulse – “Crossfade” Opening – 7-11pm

Fortunately, for both you and me, the latest exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Mario Asef, comprised of video art, drawings and an installation, comes with a trailer
