Things may be heating up at Art Basel in Miami Beach this weekend as half of NYC heads south to partake in one of the largest and most prestigious art fairs in the US, but that doesn’t mean that the art scene in NYC will be taking a breather. On the contrary this weekend is teeming with various art exhibition openings, events and parties. Getting in the holiday and gift-giving spirit, there are plenty of art shops and exhibitions taking place this weekend with affordable gift options. Get ready to sip on some delicious mulled wine and peruse rooms filled with artwork, or catch an intellectual artist talk dealing with feminism and cultural construction within the art scene. Amo Studios “From Point A to Point B” An Exhibition by Gifriends – 8-11pm

More than just moving images! New York GIF Collective, Gifriends, consisting of Michael Fivis, Marisa Gertz, Peter Marquez and Alex Thebez, will be exhibiting together in Bushwick showing a collection of GIFs (yes, we do mean the moving computer image files) made between 2010 – 2012, all relating to and created in the act of travel. Shot across the US and Asia, the images capture what would otherwise be fleeting moments. The opening reception is sure to be happenin’ and will continue til 11pm.

 

Booklyn Bookshop Pop-up Shop and Exhibition – 7-10pm

Booklyn Artists Alliance will be hosting a pop-up shop and exhibition all weekend long to celebrate the launch of their new online store and to spread the holiday cheer with some gift-giving ideas consisting of artwork, prints, and zines. Their opening party will last til 10pm, but if you can’t make it, fret not: the store will be open Saturday and Sunday, December 8th – 9th 2012, from 12-6pm.

 

Fowler Arts Collective “Year 2: Postcard Exhibition and Fun(d)raiser” – 7-10pm

Fowler Arts Collective is throwing down for their birthday bash, marking their 2nd year anniversary. Artists from all over the US have sent in postcard sized artworks (which are affordable and will be sold for under $80) that will line the walls and provide more than enough artistic stimulation for the weekend. Prizes will also be raffled off at the end of the evening, from beer tokens at Brooklyn Brewery to handmade leather guitar straps! Don’t miss out. The exhibition will continue to be on view over the weekend from 12-6pm (Saturday and Sunday, December 8th – 9th 2012). 

 

Calico Brooklyn “Calicornucopia” Exhibition and Party – 7-10pm

… And the winter festivities continue! Which means that all are encouraged to party, enjoy art and SHOP! Calico will be hosting a party and art sale this weekend with all works under $300. Come by and say Hi, peruse some art and enjoy some free beverages courtesy of the fine folks at Narragansett Beer. Calico is right down the street from Fowler Arts Collective, so be sure check out both exhibitions.

A.I.R. Gallery Artist Talk with Anne Kohl and Elianna Renner – 3-5pm

Nothing better than some Saturday afternoon intellectual conversation over a coffee! “Woman biographies and the construction of memories” is the topic that will be discussed by this art and curator duo who will give insights into their artistic and curatorial feminist practices and collaborations. Artist Elianna Renner talks about her work that is based on women’s oral history and has in the past circled around the recovery of her own family’s history. Curator Anne Kohl introduces the feminist gallery galerie futura and a work by Berlin based artist Annette Knol commissioned by galerie futura. Facebook invite here

 

CUE Art Foundation “Referrals” Mike Metz Exhibition – 6-8pm

This solo exhibition by New York-based artist Mike Metz, curated by critic and art historian Joseph Masheck, will highlight Metz’ critical engagement of the relationship between the visual (art) and verbal (language). Balancing both abstraction and concreteness, this exhibition highlights his conceptual sculptural works that are bound to impress.

 

Heliopolis “Goldilocks, Foxface, and Other Friends of Witchwood” – 8-11pm  

Fairy tales and other fantastical tales come to life through painting with a solo exhibition of round miniature paintings by Allison Merz, an artist living and working in NYC. The collection of Merz’s paintings shown here comprises a series of iconic portraits of women encompassing nature and bearing a deep sense of spirituality and collectivity. Be sure to catch this young artist at the opening!
