Red Hot: Berlin’s Best Weekend Art Events

Berlin, Berlin! If I'm not mistaken spring is officially here and summer is just around the corner. We've made it through Gallery Weekend and the coldest March on record, so let's celebrate the only way our city can. We've got the best art events and parties around Berlin here in our weekly round up of things to do this weekend! Saddle up!

Markthalle Neun – Street Food Thursday – 5-10pm

With a name like Street Food, it's gotta be good right? Whatever your cravings, this event will be the best place to grab a bite before going out Thursday night. In honor of "street culinary traditions," you can find the best food from the sidewalk from around the world under one roof this Thursday.

Der Kultur Club – While You Were Sleeping – 7:30pm

You've been out of school for a second but that doesn't mean you still don't have some things to learn. At Der Kultur Club this Thursday evening, Craig Schuftan will present what he calls a "short history of Surrealist dreamstuff in the shopping mall." While we at BAPs aren't exactly sure what he means by that, what we do know is that there will be a "secret history" of Surrealism, including the Freud's interpretation of Dreams to the Origin of Symmetry. Nerd out!

PRIVATCLUB Berlin – Mac Demarco – Doors open 7:30pm [Entry: €14,60]

Ok so I saw this guy play last November in a shady bar in Kotti and honestly it was the best fucking concert I've ever seen. The 21-year-old crooner Mac Demarco plays simple songs of love, cigarettes, and fun with his four man band. You will be charmed, you will rock out, and you will fall in love with this guy's music for sure. If you like Jonathan Richman, Shuggie Otis, or good music in general, this is too good to be true!

stattberlin – (con)temporary space-time TAIWAN/BERLIN – 7:00pm

As we've mentioned before, this month is the Month of Performance Art in Berlin – so stop by stattberlin in Mitte to kick it off. Featuring live performances by Effie Wu and Ye Yu-Jun, as well as an exhibition featuring the works by curators Yao Jui-Chung, Tsui Kuang-Yu and Chen Chieh-Jen, the show will focus on the Taiwanese performance and action art in Berlin. Although the reception will happen Thursday, there will be performances and events from 2pm to 6pm Thursday through Saturday for the rest of the month.

Galerie Alte Schule – may line is my line – 8pm

Even though we just went through the biggest art weekend of the year here in Berlin, that doesn't mean that the city is worn out from art exhibitions. Spring is in the air at Galerie Alte Schule, where they are celebrating the new month with an eponymous exhibition. There will be a group show featuring an array of international artists curated by Julia Brodauf and Felix Müller and music by Le Marquis d'A.

Babylon (Big Cinema Hall) – Videoart at Midnight – 12am

Several times a year (once a month on a Friday night to be precise) Videoart at Midnight takes over the Babylon theater of Rosa-Luxemburg to bring you some of the top experimental films. Curated by Ivo Wessel and Olaf Stüber, the showings this month features works by Nina Fischer and Maroan El Sani. If you're afraid that this will cut into your partying, remember that this is Berlin and most people don't get started until 2am! So why not go out and do something that you'll be able to talk about when the alcohol wear off at 6am!

Loftus Hall – Street Beats Present Ian Pooley & Baikal, 11pm – 7:30am [Entry: €5 before midnight, €8 after]

Well you made it through the week and now you're halfway through our weekend events! It's time to get down and dirty with some great music and dancing. This event features some of the best performers of International House including legend Ian Pooley, who has danced between the gaps of techno and house since the early 90s. The other DJ is Baikal, a musician from Siberia who is sure to make your hips shake and your body sweat. Hope you are filled with Club Mate – because you're going to be out late!

Sing Blackbird – Vintage Menswear POP UP SHOP – 12pm

Hey boys, why do the girls get all the fun when it comes to pop up shops in Berlin? If you feel that it's time to get a new summer suit or perhaps you've run your shoes into the ground through this long winter, then stop by to get some new digs for the season. Hosted by some of the most well-known clothing shops in Berlin, this event is sure to get crowded fast, so nurse your hangover and hurry over! You're going to want to find something fresh to wear to the weekend events!

Panke – a.muse Berlin Launch Party & Art Exhibition – 9pm [Entry: €5]

We at BAPs are always excited to help out our media community, so when we heard that there will be a launch party for a.muse – a new online magazine that presents musings and tips from Berlin's creative sphere – we were excited to join in. The event will feature an exhibition of 5 artists, including BAPs' very own Chris Phillip, alongside music and performances by smh, Eiliyas, and He Man Trust On Power Dust. What a way to not only end your weekend but also to start off the coming summer!
