Lighten Up: Berlin’s Best Weekend Art Events

Berlin may be rocking the runways this weekend, but in this city of sin there is always more than one scene to dig into. If Fashion Week is your cup of tea, check our Fashion Week Preview for the best ways to party with the glamor guys and dolls, but if straight up art is more your style, we present below our guide for the best art events in Berlin this coming weekend.

Martin-Gropius-Bau – “Margaret Bourke White” Opening – 7pm
Margaret Bourke White racked up many firsts in her time—she was the first foreign photographer permitted to take pictures of Soviet industry, the first photographer to create a cover for LIFE magazine, and, according to some, the first female war correspondent. If you’ve never seen her work, or been to an opening at the gorgeous Martin-Gropius-Bau, Thursday is a great night for firsts.

Ballhaus Berlin – Broken Hearts Club: “A Slave to Love/Lovesong Special”

The Broken Hearst Club “started off as a monthly event in Berlin where DJs, musicians, artists and music lovers share their top ten love songs.”  The event has since traveled all over the world and been featured at Art Basel and Art Basel Miami. Be still my beating heat.

ReTramp – “The Un/Fashion Week” – Until Sunday 10pm

Sometimes you just need to say “fuck it” to fashion. For those who are sick to death of fashion week, the good people at ReTramp are offering up a week of art that has nothing whatsoever to do with fashion. There will be an in-shop deconstructionist (one who takes things apart only to reconstruct them) and a free sweet treat for those who donate three pieces of clothing.

LEAP – “The — Family Part I: Pieta” – 8pm
After our recent investigation into performance art with Berlin-based artist Laura McLardy, we at BAPS are hungry for more. And so, without further ado, we suggest the demanding, personal spectacle confronting the concepts of family and performance itself at The Lab for Electronic Arts and Performance. Please note the performance will start punctually.
