I Killed it With a Kiss

Artwork by Mihir Parekh

I found a golden spirit
in a city full of translucent ghosts,
a mass who inhaled factory fumes
and exhaled cynical facts,
lungs bathing in cigarette smoke
and knives wedged in their throats.

The spirit laughed, emitting sizzling stars
that cascaded through the fog
and made a home
at the tips of my eyelashes,
burning them,
burning me.

I watched as I burst into flames,
my body growing alight
under its touch.
I inhaled its fire
and watched it intertwine
with the smoke in my veins
where my sins lay.

I am a coward
for I killed it
with a kiss.
