Chin Up: Berlin’s Best Weekend Art Events

Just because the snow’s coming doesn’t mean you have to hibernate! On the contrary, dear reader, if you’re planning on spending the weekend indoors then why not take advantage of all those lovely, warm galleries out there. From a Russian virtual walk-through installation to a photo exhibition by a Pulitzer Prize winner and a grand opening party at one of Berlin’s most awesome gallery spaces, it’s all happening!

Thursday November 29, 2012

Haus der Berliner Festspiele – Installation opening – 5.30pm

Tantalizingly described as a virtual walk-through installation, V_Museum Platform Moscow showcases works by a group of mostly unknown Russian artists aged between 25 and 35 who draw inspiration from Moscow’s vibrant and heterogeneous youth scene to reflect their everyday realities and address the challenges of an increasingly globalized world.

Galerie Baum Auf Dem Hügel – Exhibition – 6pm to 9pm

Art lovers are cordially invited to attend Gallery Tree On The Hill’s free “Soirée – Art After Work” and view upon some world class photography courtesy of Belgian photographer Jeff Widener. Widener is known best for his Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph of “Tank Man” – the man who on June 5, 1989 stood in defiance of advancing communist tanks during the now-infamous Tiananmen Square Massacre in Beijing, China.

STUDIO Checkpoint Charlie – Exhibition opening – 8pm
In the week-long exhibition “Illusion H2O,” artists Leila Pazooki and Iman Rezai focus on the representation of water as an element of power. An independent exhibition (the first in a forthcoming irregular series held in closed locations) of five young artists at Berlin’s Checkpoint Charlie, Pazooki, Rezai, Markus Gley, Andreas Greiner, Alessandro Rauschmann and David Kroell display their works on the subjects of illusion & science, society and magic.

KWADRAT – Exhibition opening – 5pm to 10pm

How do you recognize an abstract, non-representational sculpture? How do the room, plasticity, choice of materials and surface properties affect the price? These questions will be addressed in numerous post-abstraction sculptures at the opening of Ursula Ströbele’s “Mise-en-Scéne –  Skulpturale Rhetorik” exhibition at KWADRAT.

Someplace – The New Berlin Papers exhibition opening – 7pm to 10pm

After a whistle-blowing exhibition at StattBerlin in June, Artstars* presents the highly anticipated sophomore solo show of the visceral, opinionated and anti-art establishment New Berlin Painters. A group exhibition, works include those of returning artists Paul Vogeler and Moritz Hoffmann shown alongside the latest painter added to the collective, Philip DuSel, as well as their brand new art newspaper.

Naherholung Sternchen – Collective showcase – 8pm (€5)

Berlin-based photographer and media artist Valquire Veljkovic is just one of the many, many creative talents set to display their work, perform or present at the all-encompassing Collective Showcase, alongside a slew of live bands, djs, fashionistas, music labels, magazines and film screenings. It doesn’t get more multi-disciplinary than this!

Each space will be individually curated by a total of 20 artists, all whom will present a wry, unconventional or unexpected twist on the traditional art market format, resulting in one of STATTBAD’s most diverse artist line-ups.

Urban Spree – Grand opening & party – 6.30pm

The grand opening night of one of Berlin’s most exciting and original galleries brings together art and partying with two vernissages (Blue and Joy in the main hall, Sophia Hirsch in the ateliers) – a special open doors night of Urban Spree’s seven resident artists’ studios, the opening of a new concept art shop, a new screen-print release, and last but not the least, the unleashing of the gallery’s new winter bar with DJ sets by Ardan Bel, La Fraicheur and Leonard de Leonard.

Forum Factory – Hip-hop party – 8pm
A must for any serious hip-hop fan and those with a penchant for art of the sprayed variety, Painted Beatz combines and celebrates every aspect of the genre, from djing, rapping and breakdancing to graffiti. Representing the latter with a stylish showcase of underground street art is Team Moustache, Instinktiv Kreativ, Wute // CRN, and more.
