Carpe Diem: Berlin’s Best Weekend Art Events

The weather is miserable but that doesn’t mean we have to be! Grab your warmest coat and head out for the best arty weekend events and parties. From surreal exhibitions to graphic design festivals, we’ve got it covered.

Thursday, January 24th, 2013


Supermarkt – “Illuminations Of Wedding” – From 3pm 

Running until 5pm on Saturday, Supermarkt will host a special event celebrating urban expressionism and the role of public art for evolving communities. Part of the upcoming transmediale festival, there will be an exhibtion featuring works by international artists and a panel discussion. 


Spruth Magers Berlin – Various Exhibition Openings – 6-9pm

This is a packed evening for Spruth Magers Berlin, who will host two different exhibition openings – “Bathroom Sink, Etc.” by Analia Saban and “ICONS” by filmmaker and artist Kenneth Anger. What’s more, a new piece by Astrid Klein, “La Societe du Spectacle,” will also be unveiled. Three artists for the price of one!

Gestalten – For Light And Memory by Sergei Sviatchenko– 6-9pm

Collaging is a technique employed by many, but how many do it well? Ukranian-Danish artist Sergei Sviatchenko is amongst the select few who can. View his painting and collage work at his latest exhibition which also presents work from his ongoing project “Less,” which is based upon the book Andrei Tarkovsky: A Collector of Dreams about the groundbreaking Soviet and Russian filmmaker.

Friday, January 25th, 2013 

Morgan Contemporary – “Too Close To Home” Opening – 7pm

Lose yourself in the surreal ink drawings of Xenia Fink at her exhibition “Too Close To Home.” Dealing with topics of family, childhood, love and loneliness, we are intrigued to see what will unfurl within this series of illustrations which are rich in detail and littered with allusive quotes.

Kater Holzig – BERLIN PIECES “Graphic Days #1” – From 4pm

The fashion gurus at Berlin Pieces are hosting a two day exhibition featuring both national and international artists. Focussing upon graphic artists, illustrators and painters, the event will feature live painting and screen printing as well as live bands. What are you waiting for?

Urban Spree Gallery  – “From A to Z – the KLUB7 ABC film 2013” – Doors 9pm, Screening 10pm

Friday will see German Design collective Klub 7 present a project they have been working on for three years in which they manipulate letters and present them in a stop motion form. The premiere will be held at Urban Spree and accompanied by an aftershow party celebrating Klub 7’s 15 year anniversary.

Saturday, January 26th, 2013

Galerie Wien Lukatsch – “How To Write 1” – 4-7pm

 A group of five artists – George Brecht, Jimmie Durham, Shimabuku, Gertrude Stein and Haegue Yang – feature in this new exhibition which, unsurprisingly, focuses on artists who write.

Ida Nowhere – Kunstauktion “Kunst & Krempel” – Doors 6pm

Non-profit Neukölln space Ida Nowhere will be hosting its third art charity auction evening selling a range of art works and “oustanding creations from the Ida Nowhere estate.” An auction with a twist: the focus is on social responsibility and the cheapest bid wins! 

Backyard Berlin – “Early Days-Between Past and Decay” Opening – From 8pm

Celebrate the opening evening of an exhibition featuring the four artists Joi Bix, Joseph Wolfgang Ohlert, DT64 and Aghia Sophie at this hidden location in central Kreuzberg. Carry on the fun by partying long into the night at the afterparty, which has more DJ’s than you can shake a stick at.
