An Economy of Love

Artwork by Pavlina Bargili

Love shouldn’t be
an economy
or we’ll write of deficits
in place of heartaches or
chart-breaking, endless supply.

But if we calculate
carefully quantify
the count of my pulse quickening
for you,
we’d find, mathematically,
accurately, perhaps
justifiably that this
passion
of mine
gave me life and you guilt and
I’d take the former,
the finer, and
be off with the surplus,
my love minus
yours.

Left with still so much of mine
I could invest it,
and suddenly there’s enough for
him, for me,
for poetry and fall leaves and
I’d thank you with a check,
celebrate the final signature,
closing out our accounts but
it’s not over yet, I hope
for you,
sitting on numbers
like code, dizzied by the infinities
you didn’t venture.
