Influenced by 20th-century surrealism, Albanian painter Agim Meta’s paintings combine disparate images in a nonsensical way that evokes the game Exquisite Corpse. But Meta’s surrealism is full of kitsch and pastiche, analyzing subconscious associations as they play out in the pop culture-tinged contemporary imagination. Desert landscapes and biomorphic masses nod to the original surrealist masters, but Meta approaches the genre with a more illustrative quality.
